Drawing in the Dark
Drawing in the Dark is an invitation to slow down inside Rush, Gary Simmons chalkboard landscapes where history is written, smudged, erased, and written again.
We’ll move through the exhibition in phases of light and darkness, stopping at a handful of carefully chosen moments: covered wagons, cabins, shooting stars. Each one carries the weight of American mythmaking: expansion, ambition, disappearance. As the light shifts, you’ll draw what you see, then what you feel, letting your lines blur, change, and evolve, just like the histories Simmons is asking us to ponder.
This will be a meditation on our own uniqueness, the beauty of our own personal (sometimes) unconscious symbols, and making marks with the insouciance of childhood. There will be collaboration, ambient music, and letting go. As the lights come up, spirits will be rejuvenated, and beautiful drawings will appear.
Come curious.
Trust your intuition and your hand.
